In form Streeter saves a point for The Port – Match report

Newport IW FC saw the leagues high flying Team Solent descend on St Georges Park for Tuesday evenings mid-week fixture in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

Tom McInnes returned to the squad after Saturdays FA vase game.

It was 5 mins into the game when Newport’s Scott Sampson had a free header inside the 6 yrd box which was saved by Team Solents GK Bradley Banda.

The Port looked the better side early on with Scott Sampson almost striking again on 15 mins with a cross from Joe Butchers into the box. Scott Sampson stretched to get a foot to it but could not direct it on target which saw the ball fly over the cross bar.

Team Solents number 11 – Tyrell Mitford had their first attempt on goal on 18 mins with a wild shot from 18 yrds which went wide to the right post and did not test Gary Streeter in goal for The Port.

Against the run the play on 23 mins Newport were punished with a defensive error seeing Team Solent’s captain Jessie Waller-Lassen one on one with Gary Streeter. Solent’s captain took this opportunity with calm and ease rounding Streeter and slotting the ball home to put Team Solent 1 nil up. It was however only two minutes later when the goal scoring captain saw a yellow card for diving.

Joe Butchers certainly looked dangerous for Solents defence with his pace and ability with the ball at his feet. It was 27 minutes into the game when Joe burst in behind Solent’s right back releasing a shot from the left which traveled across the front of the goal but no Newport player there to finish off what was a superb creative piece of football.

Connor Kelly, Spike Pearce and Joe Butchers displayed some comfortable and confident build up play on 30 mins which saw the ball come from right to the left but was closed down by Team Solent’s defence as Newport drove into their 18 yrd box. The ball went out for a corner but Newport saw nothing further from this set piece.

Joe Butchers was again in the action delivering a quality ball from the right straight across Team Solent’s goal but no Newport player could get a touch on it and put the ball home to bring the game level just before half time.

HT: Newport IW FC  0:1 Team Solent

Newport started the second half as they did the first with a desire to grab a goal back early on and it wasn’t long to wait. On 48 mins Connor Kelly released a rocket from the edge of Team Solent’s box. The ball headed low and straight for Team Solent’s GK where he took it in his hands but the power was to much to hold onto the ball which saw it spilled and through the legs of the keeper rolling into the back of the net. The game now leveled at 1:1.

Team Solent saw their second booking of the game on 56 mins with Patrick Nolan seeing yellow for holding back Connor Kelly that was on bursting run to the right which would have beaten Solent’s left back had he not made the foul. The free kick from 25 yrds out to the right was taken by Connor but provided nothing for Newport from this set piece. Connor was looking sharp and threatening throughout the game getting in behind the defense with his pace.

67 mins, Connor Kelly was again back in the thick of it attacking Team Solent’s goal releasing a shot from the right hand side of Solent’s goal just outside the 6 yrd box which was tipped over the bar by the GK.

Andy Sampson was forced to make a change on 76 mins with Spike Pearce picking up an injury and being replaced by Ollie West.

The Port’s captain Martin McDonough then brought down Team Solent’s captain in the box conceding a penalty. Up stepped their No 10 Captain Jessie Waller-Lassen for the spot kick. Gary Streeter yet again proved his outstanding recent performance saving the penalty which followed a huge cheer from around the ground by all the attending Port fans. This was another penalty save to add to Streeter’s tally!!!

Andy Sampson made a further substitute on 83 mins swapping like for like with Tom McInnes coming off for Jimmi Burton.

As the game drew to an end Joe Butchers was foulled 30 yrds out on the right to give Newport one final set piece of the game and a chance to get the winner but this was fired straight at the GK and comfortably saved.

Tensions rose on 90 mins with Team Solent’s captain and goal scorer Jessie Waller-Lassen being sent off for a second dive inside Newport’s box which saw him being shown a second yellow card and a lonely walk down the tunnel.

Newport had dominated possession and looking the better side during the majority of the game with the final score ending Newport (IW) FC 1:1 Team Solent.
