A day of League and Cup upset

The Ports first team travelled away to Andover Town in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division on Saturday 18th February.

Newport were looking to improve from their 1:1 draw at home to Bournemouth Poppies last Saturday but that seemed a real up hill struggle as The Port found themselves 3:0 down in the first 25 minutes at Andover.

There was a small amount of hope on 40 mins when Andover conceded a penalty with Connor Kelly stepping up to successfully slot the ball in the net and bring the game back to 3:1.

It was going to be a battle throughout for The Port to get themselves in with a chance to get at least point out of the game. Newport got their second on 85 mins from Josh Maloney however there wasn’t enough time left to produce anything further with the match ending Andover Town 3 Newport IW FC 2.

The defeat see’s Newport drop out of the top 10 in the Wessex League Premier Division to 11th only one point ahead of Andover Town who sit 12th with 39 points.

The Ports reserves faced W&B Sports in the IW County Press Challenge Cup at Sandy Lane. With W&B’s impressive league and cup form this season it was evident early on in the game when John Linnington’s young but talented side saw themselves 2 nil down after the first 15 mins.

This didn’t phase the reserves as they continued to put all they could into it and create themselves chances to get back into the game however W&B’s experience, strength and dominance showed with the game finishing W&B 4 The Port Reserves 0.

Finally Newport A travelled away to Niton Community in the IW Saturday League Division 2 with both sides siting on the same points but goal difference separating their league positions.

Pete Brown scored for Newport with Niton equalising which saw both sides level for almost the duration game however it was Niton who grabbed the winner in the last 10 minutes with Ports substitute keeper Steve Woodward being lobbed having been just off his line. The game drew to a close and finished Niton Community 2 Newport IW FC A 1.

All three Newport’s senior teams had a tough Saturday of football and on reflection will come away knowing there are areas of the game to work and improve on.
