Port were missing a few key players for the semi-final Gold Cup clash against Vics: Jake Younie replaced the suspended Jared Wetherick in central defence and Scott Barron deputised for the unavailable Scott Sampson.
Port began brightly, with Jordan BROWNE shooting an unstoppable volley from the middle of the penalty area after just seven minutes.
Port’s second came in the 17th minute, from Joe CRAIG, who latched onto a through ball from the ever-impressive Connor Kelly.
Just three minutes later, Connor KELLY turned from provider into scorer, smashing a shot that was stopped somewhere near the goal line by a Vics defender, only for the linesman to judge that the ball had crossed the line.
There was less happy news in the 30th minute, when Jimmi Burton caught Jacob Reynold’s ankle when challenging for the ball. The young Newport defender was then stretchered off, to be replaced by Jared Cousins.
Half-time: Newport IW 3–0 East Cowes Victoria Athletic
Having dominated the first half, Port went off the boil at the start of the second, allowing Vics to get back into the game. In the 60th minute, Vics captain and former Newport player, Joe BUTCHER, shot through a crowded penalty area to pull a goal back for the East Cowes side.
However, the Port machinery soon returned to good working order when, in the 75th minute, a near-post Joe CRAIG header from a Connor Kelly corner gave the Newport midfielder his second and his side an unassailable 4–1 advantage.
In the 83rd minute, it was then Jordan BROWNE’s turn to get his second when he headed home yet another incisive Connor Kelly cross.
