Amesbury Town

Newport were still seeking their first home win of the season as they welcomed newly promoted Amesbury Town to St George’s Park.

Newport made four changes from the side that started against Fawley last week. Martin McDonough was suspended whilst Darren Powell, Keelan Sainsbury and Liam Bennett were all included on the subs bench.

On an overcast day Newport kicked off attacking the allotment end.

The first chance fell to Amesbury on five minutes. The home defence gave the ball away and it was played through to Josh Stockwell who rounded Gary Streeter but was unable to steer the ball into the empty net. Gary Streeter was called into action again shortly afterwards getting down well to turn away a low shot from Curtis Angell. After only eight minutes Amesbury made their first substitution as Cameron George replaced Paul Coventry in attack.

Amesbury Town took the lead on sixteen minutes when the ball was played over the Newport defence and Cameron George raced through to lob it over Gary Streeter.

In a Newport attack, Aiden Salisbury saw his goalbound shot strike Dave Perry and ricochet off for a corner. As Newport continued to attack, Joe Butcher fired a low cross across the face of the goal but nobody was able to turn it home.

The first half finished with Newport displaying some good approach play but seldom testing Paddy Crease whilst at the same time looking vulnerable in defence.

Half Time Newport 0 Amesbury Town 1

Newport started off looking positive as Connor Kelly fired in a shot from the left that struck the crossbar and bounced down in front of goal before being scrambled away by Amesbury.

Newport made a substitution on 62 minutes when they sacrificed a defender, Spike Pearce and brought on Darren Powell, With 15 minutes remaining Tom McInnes was introduced into the attack in place of Aiden Sainsbury and finally Liam Bennett came on for Josh Younie.

Most of the second half was played in the Amesbury half as Newport dominated possession but once again the final touch was lacking as Amesbury held on to their slender lead. Newport slipped to twelfth in the table with a three point gap opening up between them and the clubs above them.
