The Port unable to spoil the party

Newport travelled to Moneyfields FC on Saturday (22nd) for their last league game of the season and up against The Moneys who were looking to secure top spot in the Premier Division.

Moneyfields had a shot on target on 23 minutes but couldn’t find the back of the net and with not much more action from both sides the first half ended 0:0.

Both sides dominated possession at times and on 56 minutes The Moneys tested GK Gary Streeter but were unable to the advantage in this fixture.

Moneyfields looked the dominant side on 68 minutes with The Port on the back foot. On 73 minutes a shot on goal from The Moneys still wasn’t enough.

The Port had a free kick on 74 minutes with Aiden Sainsbury stepping up to take it however it wasn’t going to be Newport’s day or be Premier Division side to upset what has been a terrific season for Moneyfields FC.

With the league title starting to slip away from The Moneys as Portland Utd were winning at home to Bemerton Heath Harlequins their dominated possession paid off and the break through coming on the 76th minute with Moneyfields taking that all important lead 1:0.

Moneyfields could have made it two but they missed a penalty on the 87th minute.

The Port were not able to get anything more out of their last game or push Moneyfields FC off that top spot. The game finished 1:0 to The Moneys securing them the league title and promotion to the Southern League.

Newport IW FC end the 2016/17 season finishing 15th in the Sydenhams Wessex Football League table.
