Day: 14 October 2017

Shaftsbury 5 Newport 0

For the second match running Newport conceded five goals in defeat, once again conceding heavily in the final third of the match.
Starting the match with a bare twelve players, new manager Mike Kelly would have to conjure up something spectacular to take anything from this match but it was not to be.
Shaftesbury started the stronger creating a lot of chances but their own finishing was woeful with the occasional brilliance of Gary Streeter keeping the away sheet clean.
On 14 minutes the home side were awarded a soft penalty as Darren Powell went to block an expected shot. the striker tumbled over and a penalty was awarded. Justice was delivered as the penalty was placed two yards wide of the post.
Shaftesbury continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and inevitably the majority of efforts on goal but with no progress.
On 25 minutes the deadlock was broken as an attempted back pass was intercepted and played across goal for Malachi Benjamin to find the net.
Although Shaftesbury continued to press for the remainder of the half they were unable to increase the score.

Although the second half started in a similar vein with Shaftesbury on the attack, Newport’s best chance came on 51 minutes as Charlie Urry wriggled his way into the box he was fouled but stayed on his feet in an effort to score but was overpowered and eventually fell to the ground, only to be booked for diving.
On 57 minutes a mix up in the Newport defence allowed Martin Schroeder in with a 1 on 1 against Streeter and he scored.
On 62 minutes Martin Schroeder was in the box to score his second.
Schroeder was to score two more in the final twenty minutes as the Port struggled to deal with the constant attack that was coming down the hill at them.
