ISLAND FOOTBALL DERBY AT ST GEORGE’S PARK
The biggest fixture in the island football calendar, Newport FC v Cowes Sports, will now kick off on TUESDAY 16th JANUARY, AT 7:45pm. The game had been scheduled to take place on Boxing Day, but a waterlogged pitch led to the game being rescheduled. Why not come down to St George’s park to cheer on the two biggest local island sides?
At the time of writing, Cowes stand five points above Newport in nineteenth place, with a game in hand. In the reverse fixture, on the August bank holiday Monday, ‘the Port’ were comprehensively beaten by two late goals in a somewhat ill-tempered match, with two Newport players given their marching orders. However, Newport FC, under the regime of new manager Mike Kelly, have been much improved of late: in terms of performances, results and discipline. Having now clawed their way up from the bottom of the table, the home side should feel reasonably confident of reducing the points deficit against Cowes by three points, thus earning local bragging rights.
Newport come into the game on the back of a highly creditable 2-2 draw away to high-flying Lymington Town. Cowes, by contrast, lost their last fixture, on 23 December, 3-2 away to Team Solent, a team thrashed 0-4 at home by ‘the Port’ in November.
Let’s hope for some decent weather between now and then. To avoid disappointment, please check the niowfc.com website for an update on the pitch before travelling to the game.
See you all there.
