Newport travelled to Downton on Saturday and were unlucky to go down by a single goal.
The Downton shot hitting the post then rebounding to hit Gary Streeter on the back and bounce into the net. In an otherwise equal match it was harsh to lose in that way. Newport slipped to ninth but still have a game in hand.The Port need to get back to winning ways with their final three games against sides in the lower part of the division.
At St. George’s Park, Newport Under 17’s progressed to the final of the Mid Solent Junior B Cup against unlucky East Lodge Mustangs. The Portsmouth side took the lead in the first half only to concede an unfortunate own goal in the second. The score finishing 1-1 at 90 minutes and straight to penalties. Mustangs missed one and Port keeper saved one giving the away side three out of their five spotkicks however Port scored all of their first four to progress 4-3.
On Sunday afternoon a Charity Football Match is took place at St. George’s Park to raise funds for former Prison Officer Ben Rothwell who is suffering from Motor Neurone Disease. The game was between HMP Isle of Wight and the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
A close match of a reasonable standard resulted in a 1-0 win for the Prison staff who walked off with the trophy.
Several players on the pitch had played Wessex League standard of football so an exciting game was enjoyed by the near 300 supporters. The days events are expected to raise over £1000 which will be used to make much needed adaptions to the Rothwells house and make things less difficult for Ben and his family.
