Newport were worthy winners of the local derby due to a strong second half performance.
The Port took the lead from a corner when Jacob Reynolds volleyed in at waist height.
Reynolds was back in action shortly after when he was yellow carded after a midfield skirmish involving several players.
Cowes got back in the game before half time with a well worked goal.

Cowes made a number of substitutions for the second half.
Newport immediately regained the lead from the kick off with Mark Taylor spotting the keeper off his line and scoring from the half way mark.
Port were on top now and Jordan Browne scored the third, shooting across the keeper.
Newport took off Joe Craig and Jake Wright came on to make his first team debut.
It wasnt long before a fourth was added, an excellent cross from Neo Lamb was met full on the volley by Conner Kelly whose shot flew straight into the net.
Andy Sampson made further substitutions with Jacob Reynolds and Gary Streeter coming off to be replaced by Harrison Yates and Fraser Law.
Newport’s young keeper immediately made a top quality save, finger tipping a stinging shot from Mike McEnerey onto the bar and away.
Mark Taylor rounded off a good evenings workout with a shot that crashed into the net off the underside of the bar.
