Newport conceded a late winner to Verwood having dominated for most of the game.
Andy Sampson set out his stall leaving Charlie Urry, Jared Cousins and Spike Pearce on the bench and opting for Scott Barron in defence, Lewis Wright in midfield and Liam Triggs in an attacking role.
Newport started the livelier and were quickly on the offensive but struggled to get an effort on target.
Breaking down the flanks, the Port forced a succession of corners but didn’t really put the visitors goal in danger. On 25 minutes the home side got the breakthrough they deserved when they were awarded a penalty for a rash challenge. Connor Kelly stepped up to hit the ball hard and low into the right hand side of the net.
The goal sparked Verwood into getting more attacking moves going and although enjoying a good spell and getting into dangerous positions , the resulting shots were off target. This was all to change on 35 minutes when Ollie Davies hit a screamer into the top corner from 25 yards.
Half Time: Newport 1 Verwood Town 1
Verwood probably felt relieved to be on level terms at half time and made a tactical substitution in an effort to change things. The second half then took on a different pattern of play with Verwood getting more of the ball in the Port half, although the home side looked more threatening even though chances were fewer.
Newport pressed players forward in an attempt to find the winner and again won a succession of corners but were unable to bury the ball in the net. A goal at this point would probably have won it for the home side but it was not coming.
Newport pushed everyone forward in an attempt to get the winner but a long clearance from the Verwood defence allowed Lee Vint to break past the last defender and run on and lob the ball over the stranded Gary Streeter into an empty net.
A buoyant Verwood then took the game to Newport in the final few minutes and wind the game down to claim the three points.
