Newport 6 East Cowes Vics 1

Under baking sunshine the two sides currently playing at Beatrice Avenue took to the pitch in the first Island derby of the season. Newport welcomed back from suspension both Jordan Browne and Mark Taylor, the latter being on the substitutes bench. The Vics welcomed back four players who were unavailable on Saturday, Liam Newbold, Zack Harris, Jimmi Burton and Jordan Chapman.

The match got off to an absolute flyer when on two minutes, Newport conceded a free kick just outside their penalty area and Joe Butcher curled the ball over the wall leaving Gary Streeter flat footed.

On 4 minutes an incident occured that was to change the course of the game and left Vics with 10 men for the remainder of the match. A clash between Zack Harris and Joe Craig resulted in a red card for the Vics defender. Contraversial so early in the match, varied opinions on the decision but the referee was confident with his view of the incident.

Newport were level within two minutes when Scott Sampson headed home a cross.

On 13 minutes the Port took the lead when a ball was fed through to the unmarked Joe Craig who shot firmly past the Vics keeper.

Just past the half hour mark Newport stretched their lead when Scott Sampson pounced to score after Vics keeper Steinbourne-Busse could only parry a Connor Kelly free kick.

It was going to be hard work in the heat for the Vics in the second half.
