Devizes Town 1 Newport 3

The Port came back from behind with a strong second half performance to go through into the 1st Round proper of the FA Vase.

A sloppy pass in defence gave the ball to a home striker who shot past Gary Streeter to put Devizes ahead. Newport were to get the ball in the net but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The turning point came in injury time of the first half when the referee awarded a penalty to Devizes.

Gary Streeter pulled off the save that kept the club in the game and the Port went in at half time 1-0 down.

A good shake up at half time and the team came out with a determination to get the game back. Joe Craig had been a thorn in the side of Devizes all game and quickly scored two breakaway goals. Firstly he shot past the keeper and second time he lobbed him to put the Port in the driving seat.

A bizarre situation from a corner led to a third goal for the Port from a corner. Newport took it but the linesman flagged to say it wasn’t in the corner spot. It was taken again and Scot Sampson got on the end of it to head home. 3-1 and the Port were more comfortable. Scott Sampson was then shown  straight red card that even Devizes felt was no more than a yellow.

The Port then held on with ten men to go through to the next round on October 12th.

The winners receive £725 and the losers £250. The draw for the first round Proper will be made on Monday around lunchtime.

Newport reserves won 11-0 at home to Yarmouth and Calbourne. The goal scorers were Danny Mew 3, Brad Thompson 3, Harry Cheek 2, Ashton Moss – Simmonds 2 and Adrian Voigt.

On Tuesday,  Newport take on Southern League side Sholing in a Hampshire Senior Cup tie at Beatrice Avenue. Kick off is 7.45pm
