Shanklin Friendlies

Newport sent two sides over to Shanklin on Saturday in the last friendlies before the respective league seasons take off.

The Port’s first team took the lead in their match on 27 minutes when Joe Butcher curled the ball over the keeper into the top corner to score his first goal since returning to the club.

Both teams were intent in attacking and Shanklin had their share of the attempts on goal. Neither team were able finish off any more chances in the half and the Port took a 1-0 lead into the half time break.

Shanklin came out on the attack in the second half and from a corner former Newport player Kyle Drew connected sweetly with the ball and volleyed through the crowded penalty area to score.

Both sides had their share of attempts to win the game but the match fizzled out to a 1-1 draw.

Newport reserves proved to be too strong for their opponents and ran out 4-0 winners with teenage striker Flynn McCabe getting a hat trick and Ollie MacArthur scoring direct from a corner.

All in all a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine, a decent pitch and welcoming facilities and hosts.

Supporters return to Football

From this Saturday, supporters can return to watch lower levels of non league football.

This means that our supporters can come to Bembridge on Saturday to watch the double header as both our first and reserve teams take on the Island League club, first team match starting at 2.00pm.

Numbers allowed at each match are strictly limited, for our level, starting Saturday up until our first home league match against Andover New Street, we will be limited to a maximum of 150 supporters.

From the following home match, providing everyone is content this will rise to 300 supporters.

For home matches the clubhouse at Beatrice Avenue will be open, however there will be protocols to follow and these will be made clear nearer the time of our first home game.

Things will be different as we operate in a new type of normal following national instructions and local risk assessments.

ALL supporters must continue to observe social distancing and will be required to provide Track and Trace info upon entry to the ground, this is non negotiable.

Please comply with Stewards, who are all volunteers and are working for everybody’s safety.

FA Vase Draw

Newport have been drawn at home to Calne Town of the Western League Division 1 in the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Vase.

The winners will play at home to Alton Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round.

East Cowes Vics have also been drawn at home to Western League opponents but face Westbury United from the Premier Division. The winners of that match are away to Horndean in the 2nd Qualifying Round.

First friendly

Newport started their pre-season schedule with a 3-0 victory over Island Div 1 side Whitecroft and Barton.

The match was played at Cowes Enterprise College on the 3g pitch in blazing sunshine and behind closed doors.

WaB started the brighter, fielding most of their experienced former Wessex players, had several early shots but didn’t really test Alex Ram starting in goal for the Port.

Newport gradually started to get on the front foot and took the lead on 20 minutes with a familiar left foot strike from Connor Kelly.

There was some good build up play from the Port who showed that plenty of work had been done in the previous weeks.

The game had two drink breaks on 30 and 60 minutes with a short interval at half time.

Newport were unable to penetrate the WaB defence further in the first half although they created some good chances.

New signing Joe Butcher was brought on at the first drinks break and it looked as though most players would get 60 minutes with goalkeepers getting 45 mins each and reserve players getting 30.

Half Time: Newport 1 Whitecroft and Barton  0

Joe McCormack took over in goal and there was a general switch around.

On 57 minutes Newport were awarded a penalty for handball which looked and sounded more like body. Despite WaB protestations the penalty went ahead and Connor Kelly kept his cool to score in the searing heat.

Newport were now well in control and having the lions share of possession, probably a little ahead in terms of fitness and continuing to press for goal.

Joe Craig was seeing a lot of the ball in the second half and on 65 minutes was to unleash an unstoppable shot from over 20 yards to extend the lead.

Both sides continued to give game time to their full squads as the pace started to slow and substitutions increased.

Joe Butcher had a couple of chances later in the game but shot across goal narrowly going wide of the far post on each occasion.

Full Time: Newport 3 Whitecroft and Barton 0

Newport squad: Alex Ram,Joe McCormack, Ryan Hughes, Reece Wren, Neo Lamb, Spike Pearce, Martin McDonagh, Scott Barron, Mark Taylor, Ollie McArthur, Jacob Reynolds, Jared Cousins, Joe Butcher, Jake Wright, Joe Craig, Jordan Browne, George Holmes, Connor Kelly.
