Newport sent two sides over to Shanklin on Saturday in the last friendlies before the respective league seasons take off.
The Port’s first team took the lead in their match on 27 minutes when Joe Butcher curled the ball over the keeper into the top corner to score his first goal since returning to the club.
Both teams were intent in attacking and Shanklin had their share of the attempts on goal. Neither team were able finish off any more chances in the half and the Port took a 1-0 lead into the half time break.
Shanklin came out on the attack in the second half and from a corner former Newport player Kyle Drew connected sweetly with the ball and volleyed through the crowded penalty area to score.
Both sides had their share of attempts to win the game but the match fizzled out to a 1-1 draw.
Newport reserves proved to be too strong for their opponents and ran out 4-0 winners with teenage striker Flynn McCabe getting a hat trick and Ollie MacArthur scoring direct from a corner.
All in all a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine, a decent pitch and welcoming facilities and hosts.
