Hythe & Dibden 1 Newport 1 (Pens 8-9)

Newport progressed to the 2nd round of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup following a penalty shoot out at the Hythe Garage Stadium last night.

Newport started with a strong line up and just one change from Saturdays draw at Verwood as Joe Craig came in for George Turner who didn’t travel.

Newport produced a significantly improved performance from Saturday and took the game to Hythe & Dibden in the first half. The Port were to take the lead on 40 minutes after having been awarded a penalty, Connor Kelly the scorer. The score remained 1-0 to the Port at half time.

Hythe & Dibden came out for the second half with much more intent and equalised after 62 minutes. Newport managed to get back to their first half levels and pressed hard but couldnt break through and score. A screaming shot from Ryan Hughes tipped around the post by the home keeper was the closest they could come to scoring.

The match then went to the dreaded penalty shoot out and some shoot out it was with every player on the field taking a penalty.

Newport eventually coming through 9-8.

Newport – Scored 9, Keeper saved 1, hit bar 1.

The winning penalty put away under pressure by Ryan Hughes.

Newport will be at home to Baffins Milton Rovers in the 2nd Round.
